Color & Characteristics
- Eyed side grayish brown, covered with small, indistinct white spots; blind side lemon yellow
- Lateral line with high arch over pectoral fin; long, produced snout; concave profile above the eyes
- The characteristic snout develops in juveniles after about 40 mm in length
Habitat
- Predominantly boreal Pacific
- Benthic, on sand and mud substrates
- Shallow, in water depths to 125 m
- Near-bottom temperatures of 0-11°C
Feeding
- Preys on polychaetes, gammarid amphipods, bivalves, cumaceans
- Eaten by cods, sculpins, halibuts, skates, and other bottom fishes
