Title: Taxonomic biodiversity of benthic boundary layer zooplankton from the Beaufort Sea shelf
Principal Investigators |
Project goals
To identify hyperbenthic organisms and zooplankton species collected on the Beaufort Sea shelf and to gain knowledge and experience in taxonomic identification through collaboration with experts in the field.
Results (ongoing)
Epibenthic sled samples collected in the Beaufort Sea (MacKenzie Canyon to Gulf of Amundsen) in 2004 and 2005 were sorted, counted and identified to species level when possible. Abundance estimates were then calculated for these samples. Results include data from 37 stations and for 28 taxonomic groups, including mysids and chaetognaths to species where possible. We also used mini-grant funds to measure lengths and wet weights of mysids from these samples toward the goal of estimating mysid biomass.
During this project, Tara went to the German Centre for Marine Biodiversity Research (DZMB) in Wilhelmshaven, Germany for 11 weeks under the direction of Pedro Martinez to identify hyperbenthic samples from the Beaufort Sea shelf.
