Fish sampling effortSampling intensity varies widely at the polar regions. Shown here is northern polar region fish data available in OBIS, the Census database. White indicates areas where little or no data. Red indicates a high value of records are available, blue low. Credit: Edward Vanden Berghe, OBIS.

Illustrated Keys to Free-Living Invertebrates of Eurasian Arctic Seas and Adjacent Deep Waters, Vol. 1, Published: Alaska Sea Grant College Program (Fairbanks, USA), in cooperation with the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia) released the new 192-page book with Identification keys to twelve taxonomic groups: Rotifera, Pycnogonida, Cirripedia, Leptostraca, Mysidacea, Hyperiidea, Caprellidea, Euphausiacea, Dendrobranchiata, Pleocyemata, Anomura, and Brachyura. Volume editors are S.V. Vassilenko and V.V. Petryashov and series editor is ArcOD’s steering group member B.I. Sirenko, all Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.

This first book of a series, translated from Russian to English, provides the international science community with tools to identify marine invertebrate species in Russian Arctic seas. The outstanding taxonomic expertise is based on Russia’s long history of arctic invertebrate taxonomy, and persistent exploration of the arctic seas over the past century. The book is a contribution by ArcOD to the Census of Marine Life and the International Polar Year. Click for more information or to order.

The Polar Synthesis Macroscope group met May 13-16 at the Villefranche Laboratory near Nice, France. Eleven participants from the Antarctic (CAML) and Arctic (ArcOD) projects, combined with the Mapping and Visualisation group, explored biodiversity data of the ice oceans. Census research efforts during the International Polar Year provide a comprehensive inventory of the marine species: over 6,000 verified species of animals at each pole and 251 species which occur at both poles. At the molecular level, DNA sequences are showing differences in some species that were previously thought to be the same. The analyses showed a close connection between the species and their physical environment at various spatial scales,

Press release: Census of Marine Life Explorers Find Hundreds of identical Species Thrive in Both Arctic and Antarctic Researchers in North and South startled to find Polar oceans share 235 species; Changes in species distribution documented as warmer oceans spur migration; United by high-speed current, Antarctic benthos revealed as single bioregion; Smaller species replacing larger ones in some Arctic waters. Local painter inspired by SFOS researchers. A local Fairbanks art gallery will feature paintings, inspired by the arctic research and photographs of University of Alaska Fairbanks scientists. Susan Farnham, a Fairbanks artist, has been working with ArcOD to create artwork that celebrates the northern creatures they study. Images from ArcOD researchers thet inspired the work are also featured. The painting. The Images.
