Eualus fabricii (Kroyer, 1841)
A common benthic shrimp of the Arctic and extreme northern Pacific and western Atlantic
Size
- Total length to 42 mm
Color & Characteristics
- Body dull gray to yellowish background with red dots; third maxilliped, pereopods & first pleopod banded with red
- Third abdominal segment without “hump”, rostrum about 1.3 times as long as carapace, with 2-6 dorsal teeth extending from the anterior carapace to the eye; 1-5 ventral teeth
- Distinguished from similar species by having larger chelae on first pereopods, 7 segments in carpus (just proximal to chela) of second walking legs
- Third to fifth walking legs long and slender, with spines on dactyls
Habitat & Distribution
- Subtidal mud and pebbles, 4-255 m
Feeding
- Scavenger, predator on smaller annelids, crustaceans and mollusks
Life cycle
- Egg-bearing females have been noted in May to November
- The eggs hatch as zoeal stages, metamorphose to the megalops stage and settle to sea floor

- Can be parasitized by the isopod Hemiarthrus abdominalis
