Astarte borealis (Schumacher, 1817)
A very common benthic bivalve mollusk of arctic seas.
Size
- Length to 51 mm. Adults usually 30-35 mm.
Color
- Periostracum light brown to dark brown or black. Usually dull.
- Inside – white.
Habitat & Distribution
- Infaunal mainly, on different types of sediments from silty to sandy sediments, often with gravel or stones.
- Sublitoral mainly.
- Widespread boreal-arctic.
Feeding
- Suspension feeder.
Life cycle
- Proterandric hermaphrodite.
- Eggs are attached to the substratum.
- Development without pelagic larvae.
