Sea Bottom

What’s here?
This section provides images and background on the groups of organisms that call the seafloor their home. It is intended to be primarily visual, and provide brief detail, natural history, and known distribution of species.
The site is currently being revised, and will ultimately include detailed species information pages. It will grow over time as more images are collected. Higher resolution versions of most images are available upon request.
Life at the seafloor is called 'benthos'. The seafloor animals ('zoobenthos') occur at all water depths, while the plant life ('phytobenthos') is restricted to shallower coastal regions, where sufficient light facilitates phytosynthesis. The Arctic Ocean CoML initiative focuses on the zoobenthos in the Arctic regions.
